Global energy giant Schneider Electric has unveiled plans to construct a £42 million factory on the North Yorkshire coast, which is expected to bring 200 new jobs to the region. The new facility, located near the company's existing site in Scarborough, will produce cutting-edge equipment for renewable energy projects, electric vehicles, and energy-efficient buildings.
Set to open in early 2025 at Scarborough Business Park, the state of the art factory is designed as a net-zero model made for sustainable operations. Around a third of the energy required will be generated by an advanced solar power system, while intelligent building management will ensure optimal energy efficiency with automated heating/cooling and light sensors.
The factory will also feature electric vehicle charging points, and will provide showers, cycling racks, and shelters to encourage sustainable travel for its employees.
Schneider Electric currently employs 450 people in Scarborough, where its plant specialises in manufacturing low-voltage switchgear that supports energy efficient buildings and electric vehicle charging points. The company's move to the larger site comes as part of its wider commitment to bolstering the UK's green economy.
Kelly Becker, president of Schneider Electric for the UK, Ireland, Belgium, and the Netherlands, said that Scarborough has long been a key part of their operations in the UK, and they are very excited to expand as part of our investment in the green economy.
Mayor of York and North Yorkshire David Skaith welcomed the announcement, stating that it would "drive new, quality jobs" and contribute to the region's goal of becoming England's first carbon-negative area.
Schneider's investment follows a £7.2 million upgrade to its Leeds site in 2023, which created 110 jobs as part of the company's ongoing commitment to Yorkshire.
