Hydropower plan could boost Cheddar community

A community led project in Cheddar Gorge could see the River Yeo once again harnessed to generate clean energy, supporting local initiatives and electric vehicle infrastructure.

Volunteers are exploring the installation of a small hydropower system at the site of the former Cox's Mill Hotel. The project, currently three quarters of the way through a one-year feasibility study, aims to produce renewable electricity that would both power new car charging points and fund community projects.

The river has a long history of industrial use, having once powered up to 13 mills for activities such as paper and corn production. The new initiative would build on that legacy, using modern technology to generate an estimated 200,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year - enough to supply several dozen homes.

Organisers say the system would operate on a brownfield site and be designed to integrate sensitively with the natural surroundings of Cheddar Gorge. The electricity produced would feed directly into car charging stations, allowing vehicles to be powered by energy generated from the flowing water nearby. Profits from the sale of surplus electricity would be reinvested into other community-led schemes, supporting wider sustainability goals in the area.

The project has received funding from the government's Community Energy Fund, managed by the South West Net Zero Hub, which supports local renewable energy development across the region.

If successful, the hydropower installation could become a model for small-scale renewable energy schemes in rural communities, combining environmental benefits with practical support for local needs. Volunteers hope it will demonstrate how natural resources can be used responsibly to provide long-term value for residents and visitors alike.

The final stage of the feasibility study is expected to be completed later this year, with outcomes determining the next steps for the proposed development.
