Plans to bring renewable energy onshore from a proposed offshore wind farm off the north Devon coast have been approved by North Devon Council.

The White Cross offshore wind project, located around 30 miles out to sea, aims to install seven floating turbines to generate clean electricity for the region. As part of the scheme, a subsea cable will come ashore at Saunton Sands, and will then be routed under Braunton Burrows and across the Taw Estuary to a new substation inland.

At a planning meeting held at Barnstaple Rugby Club, councillors gave the go-ahead to the development, which is expected to contribute significantly to the South West's renewable energy capacity. The approval follows a detailed consultation process and presentations from industry and education leaders, who emphasised the long-term benefits of the project.

Supporters pointed to the opportunity to strengthen local infrastructure and skills, as well as the economic potential of the scheme. The development is set to inject more than £150 million into the local economy and is expected to support a wide range of new employment opportunities in both the construction and ongoing operation of the wind farm.

The project has been described as a major investment in the region's energy future, with the potential to help meet national net zero targets while creating pathways for young people to access careers in green industries.

Developers have pledged to work closely with local organisations to minimise disruption and ensure that environmental protections are maintained throughout the construction phase. The wind farm is part of a broader strategy to increase the UK's offshore renewable capacity and deliver long-term sustainability.

Construction is expected to begin in the coming years, subject to further regulatory approvals and environmental assessments.
