A major development on the River Tyne is set to transform the region into a hub for renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, with the potential to create up to 12,000 jobs.
The Port of Tyne has announced plans for an investment of £150m in the Tyne Clean Energy Park, covering 230 acres across sites in North and South Shields. The project is designed to provide world-class infrastructure for the clean energy, offshore wind, and advanced manufacturing industries.
Central to the scheme will be the redevelopment of both banks of the port alongside the construction of a 400m deep-water quayside. Its location near the North Sea wind farm arrays is seen as a strategic advantage, positioning the port as a key supply chain base for the rapidly expanding renewables sector.
The park is to be located in an Industrial Strategy Zone, offering a range of business incentives. These include relief on business rates, exemptions from stamp duty land tax, and enhanced capital allowances. Supporters of the plan say this package will encourage investment while ensuring the site becomes a focal point for companies working in green energy and related fields.
The first phase of the port's redevelopment has already been completed with £6m invested in a new berth and a 23,000 sq ft warehouse at Howdon Quay. This early progress is seen as a foundation for the larger project now being proposed.
Regional leaders believe the Tyne Clean Energy Park could establish the north-east as a leading base for renewable energy. They highlight the potential for thousands of skilled jobs, long-term growth, and opportunities for businesses across the wider supply chain. The development is being presented as a decisive step in making the region a central part of the UK's transition to clean energy.
